Zuhal Demir


Zuhal Demir (Genk, 1980) was active in Amnesty International during her school period. She studied law at the Leuven University, and specialised in employment law. During her study, she acted as student representative, and took care of many matters of concern to her fellow students. Since 2004 she has been an employment lawyer, until 2010, when she got elected as MP for the N-VA, the New Flemish Alliance. This is a Flemish-nationalist and liberal conservative party. Although this party won the 2010 elections on the federal scale in Belgium and participated in the world-record breaking long deliberations about the formation of a new government, it did not participate in the government coalition that was finally based on the elections: the federal government of prime minister Eli Di Rupo.
Zuhal Demir is active in the parliament's committee for social affairs and trade law. Since 2013 she is the chair of the district of of Antwerp, the largest district of the city of Antwerp. She is an advocate of LGBT rights and welcomed the participants to the Antwerp conference.
