Ken Edward Moala


Ken MoalaKen Moala is fa'fafine (= Samoan word for embracing the spirit of both the male and female cultural genders). He is human rights activist/advocate from the independent state of Samoa, South pacific. He holds the chiefly title of Fia'ailetoa from the district of Lepa in Upolu Somoa, a role which is based on service rather than status.
For over 30 years he has been a pioneer for LGBTI issues in the Pacific. He founded the Samoan AIDS Foundation in 2005, and represented the Pacific at many regional and international forums on HIV and AIDS and Human Rights. In 2007, Ken Moala co-founded the Pacific Sexual Diversity Network (PSDN), a network of regional LGBTI organisations and groups where is currently is technical advisor. He is also member of the ILGA interim committee for Oceania.

Ken presently serves on the board of GLISA-AP, which is the Asia/Pacific's network of sports, culture and human rights organisations for the 'rainbow community'. Together with the local organising committee LISA-AP will host the 3rd Aia/Pacific OutGames and Human Rights Conference in the city of Darwin, Australia in 2014.

As a Christian, en Moala has been very instrumental in creating safe spaces for the LGBTI Christian community in the Pacific and creating a dialogue with the mainstream churches on LGBT issues.
