Marleen Temmerman


Marleen TemmermanMarleen Temmerman (Lokeren (Belgium),1953) is a gynecologist, professor and former politician.
From 1986 to 1992 she lived in Kenya. In 1994 she was one of the founding mothers of the International Center For Reproductive Health (ICRH).

She started her political career at Agalev (a Green party in Flanders that changed its name in 2003 into Groen! ( = Green!). In 2001, she was representative for Agalev in the Ghent city council for a short while. In 2004, she became member of the SP-A, the Flemish "Socialist Party - Different" and in 2007 she became senator for that party, responsible for foreign affairs and defence. In that capacity, she was also a member of the European Parliamentary Forum and chair of the HIV/AIDS advisory group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

In 2008, Marleen Temmermans was rewarded for her activities, becoming Commander in the Order of Leopold. When in 2011 Johan Vande Lanotte stepped down as delegation SP-A's leader in the senate, she was the person to take this position. In 2012 however, she laid down her political career after accepting a position in the World Health Organisation.

Since that time, she has been director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR), and of a UNDP/UNFA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank special programme of Research, Development and Research training in Human Reproduction (HRP).
HRP is the main instrument within the United Nations system for research in human reproduction, bringing together policy-makers, scientists, health care providers, clinicians, consumers and community representatives to identify and address priorities for research to improve sexual and reproductive health.
Professor Marleen Temmerman is also a full professor at the Ghent university, currently with leave of absence.

At the Antwerp conference, Marleen Temmerman participated in a panel discussion on Health in the LGBT world.
