Joke Swiebel


Joke SwiebelJoke Swiebel (1941) studied political sciences at the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). She has been an activist in both the feminist and the gay and lesbian movement. She worked as a civil servant for a semi-governmental advisory body, two (Dutch) national ministries and international organisations. Her activities also included the position of vice-chair of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and the presidency of the Steering Committee for Equality between Women and Men of the Council of Europe. She also took part in the Netherlands governmental delegation to the UN Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1955).

From 1999 to 2004 Joke Swiebel was member of the European parliament for the Dutch Labour party. Within the European parliament her wrok included human rights and non-discirmination policies, migration issues, and EU enlargement.
She was also chair of the European Intergroup for gay and lesbian rights (an intergroup is an informal group of MEPs from different parties, working together on one issue.)
Joke Swiebel published numerous articles and papers in subjects such as gender equality policies, anti-discrimination legislation and human rights. In 2007, she received the Bob Angelo Award from the Dutch LGBT organisation CC for her contributions to the national and international LGBT movement.
As co-president of the Human Rights conference linked to the first OutGames in Montréal and initiator of the Declaration of Montréal, she facilitated in 2013 at the Antwerp conference a panel on transitions and best practices.
