Mark Sergeant


Mark SergeantMark Sergeant achieved a bachelor in social work at the Higher Institute for Social and Cultural Work of the Arbeidershogeschool HISKWA (Workers Highschool) at Anderlecht (Belgium), and followed a Summer School in Designing theory and evidence-based interventions (Intervention Mapping for aids prevention) RESHAPE at the Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
From 1991 to 2003. Mark Sergeant worked as a policy worker for the Holebifederatie now called Çavaria, in Ghendt (B).
In the 1994 - 1999 period, he was founder and chief editor of the Belgian LGBT magazine Zizo.
He wrote several books, such as "Bouwstenen voor een Globaal Vlaams Holebibeleidsplan" (Contributions to a general Flemish policy plan for lesbians, gays and bisexuals, in Dutch, 2000), "De holebitheek" (on lesbians, gays and bisexuals in books and movies, in Dutch, 2001) and "Holebi's in Vlaanderen" (LGBs in Flanders, also in Dutch, 2002), all commissioned by the department of Equal Opportunities in Flanders.
Mark Sergeant is coordinator of the research project about accessibility of the general social welfare work, commissioned by the departments of Welfare and of Equal Opportunities in Flanders. He has been working as a youth counselor for the municipal Youth Service of the city of Antwerp, and as s youth worker for Uit De Marge (Öut of the Margin), a youth work coordination centre for underprivileged children in Antwerp, and for a youth centre in Herne. As of 2003, he is a policy worker for MSM (men who have sex with men for Sensoa, the Flemish expert centre for sexual health, in Antwerp.
