New York celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots with a massive demonstration for lesbian and gay rights.
ILGA organised its world conference in New York.
The Gay Games took place in New York.
And somewhere in between those events, a meeting took place of trade unionists, mainly from Canada and the US, where lesbian and gay trade union rights were discussed.
A few Europeans also visited this meeting.
At this meeting, the idea was born to organise a true world conference about lesbian and gay trade union rights in 1998, in Amsterdam.
This idea was inmediately discussed in, and endorsed by, the ILGA world conference.
